Yet the optional nature of RSS’s guid and its ambiguous default behavior create real‑world headaches that Atom’s stricter schema avoids.
Why Atom Wins on Specification
Atom was drafted as a direct response to RSS’s “flawed and ambiguous” design. Its XML schema mandates an id element for every entry, giving feed authors a clear, enforceable way to tag items uniquely. If a publisher omits the id, the spec treats the feed as invalid, and the author can be “sent angry e‑mails” for the oversight. By contrast, RSS only introduced the guid tag in version 2.0, and even then it isn’t required. The result is a spectrum of implementations where some clients must infer uniqueness from other fields.
The requirement also simplifies client logic. Because every Atom entry carries a guaranteed identifier, parsers can skip heuristic matching and focus on delivering content. Developers building readers like Elfeed report that the absence of a required identifier in RSS forced them to make “major design compromises” to handle duplicate or changed items.
The GUID Mess in RSS
RSS’s guid suffers from two critical flaws. First, it is optional, so many feeds simply omit it. Without a guid, clients resort to guessing—some use the <link> value, assuming it’s unique; others compare the entire item payload, treating any change as a new entry. Both approaches break when a feed’s description changes for advertising or when two items share a link.
Second, the default content of a guid must be a permanent URL, not a true globally unique identifier. Only when the isPermalink attribute is explicitly set to false can the value be a non‑URL GUID, and even that usage is rare. This oversight means many RSS feeds publish what appear to be GUIDs but are merely URLs, undermining the purpose of the tag. Atom’s id sidesteps this by being required and unambiguous.
Historical Context and Market Shifts
The rivalry dates back to the early 2000s when RSS fragmented into multiple versions and vague specifications. A 2013 recollection notes that the “first Atom meeting at the Google offices” aimed to fix those problems, but the format never gained the same brand recognition. Facebook’s social feed later eclipsed both standards for casual users, reducing the incentive to choose one over the other.
Despite the market shift, the technical community still needs a reliable format. Both Atom and RSS remain widely supported by major readers, which “present a uniform API to whatever is consuming the feed.” The RSS Board, chaired by Rogers Cadenhead in 2023, continues to maintain the RSS 2.0 spec, but the community’s frustration with its inconsistencies persists. A newer JSON Feed format exists, yet adoption remains limited, leaving Atom as the most robust XML alternative.
What Developers Should Expect
For new projects, the pragmatic choice is clear: adopt Atom when possible. Its stricter schema reduces the likelihood of broken feeds, and the required id element eliminates the need for client‑side heuristics. Existing RSS feeds can be migrated with modest effort—adding an id and correcting guid usage resolves most compatibility issues.
If you must support RSS, be prepared to handle the variability. Expect to see feeds without guid, with URL‑based GUIDs, and with changing descriptions that can trigger duplicate‑item bugs. Test across multiple clients—Elfeed, The Old Reader, Liferea—to see how each interprets missing identifiers.
What to Watch
Keep an eye on the RSS Board’s activity under Cadenhead’s chairmanship; any move to make guid required would narrow the gap with Atom. Also watch the adoption rate of JSON Feed in open‑source readers—if it gains traction, it could finally provide a clean, modern alternative to both XML formats. Until then, the industry’s safest bet remains Atom’s disciplined approach to feed identification.
